Hallucination By the River

By the river run black
Lay the old man with the book
The shark-skin rug scratches soft skin
The metallic shoe clicks on cold concrete.

The sun yolk pops, and the horizon
And soon after, the river
Is streaked with a thick yellow
Syrupy and congealing.
