"Lumpy Dog Light Lager"
by Jennifer Van Buren

Rock Bottom down in Bethesda serves us up a sample tray
shot glass spectrum of shades
tan to black
with a side trip through amber, honey, red

copper vessels tower all tube connected
above the artificially distressed wooden tabletops

to the left they mix the mash for us to witness
while pressure gauges
rise, all temperatures controlled

she clicks her pen two times before
reciting the specials of the day
scripted soliloquy served with fresh squeezed smiles after a pause

for effect

and a sprig of parsley

leaving me to wonder
is this another back stage tour of disneyland
where characters pass their heads at the change of shift

shaded rainbow of beer another tap of bud sprinkled with local flavor
given fair market value and names like lumpy dog to appeal to the domesticated broad in booth #3 who teeters like the rest of them
somewhere between lusting puppy love and tripping over the edge of the main
stream
